High-power conservative operative whose big break came in 1968, when he was producing the Mike Douglas Show and Richard M. Nixon, campaigning for President and a guest on the show, complained backstage about the "gimmick" of having to appear on TV chat programs. Ailes, then 26, explained to Nixon that if he still thought television was a "gimmick" he would never be President. Ailes was soon hired as a media consultant for Nixon, and later worked for Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush's presidential campaigns. Ailes was hired by Rupert Murdoch to run Fox News when that channel was founded in 1996.

"The only question is whether we depict Willie Horton with a knife in his hand or without it."

"There are four things the media are interested in. They're interested in polls, they're interested in pictures, they're interested in mistakes, and they're interested in attacks."

"I don't ignore anything. Somebody gets in my face, I get in their face."

Paula Zahn recalls that when she told Ailes she was moving to CNN in 2001, "he made it very clear to me that he was not going to make life easy for me. He told me I was allowing myself to be drawn into what he called a holy war between CNN and Fox News, and that I was going to have to pay a price for that."
