In Santa Cruz, Michael Been co-founded Motion Pictures in 1979, later changing their name to The Call. The band's notable hits during the MTV era include "When the Walls Came Down", "Everywhere I Go", and "I Still Believe." Al Gore used his song, "Let the Day Begin", extensively during the 2000 US Presidential campaign. Been died in Belgium while touring as a soundman with his son Robert's band, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
