International wire service, created from the 1958 merger of United Press Association (founded 1907 by newspaper publisher E. W. Scripps) and International News Service (founded 1909 by William Randolph Hearst). Scripps dumped its stake in UPI for exactly $1 in 1982. Sun Myung Moon bought the company in May 2000.
