Internet transaction service, founded 1998 in Palo Alto, California as "Confinity" by Peter Thiel and Max Levchin. It merged with X.com, another Palo Alto startup, in 2000. PayPal was acquired by eBay in 2002, after which eBay phased out its competitor service, Billpoint.
