Founded 1997 by Keith Teare, RealNames was a hare-brained idea to map something resembling AOL's "keyword" system on top of DNS as "Internet Keywords", and charge companies different rates depending on how juicy their desired keywords were. The only significant browser that ever recognized these was Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and when that misfeature was turned off, there were no point to buying keywords.
