Founded 1924 by Dean, Jean and Guy Witter. In 1929 it opened a New York City office and obtained a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1972 it became a public company, and in 1978 acquired Reynolds & Co. to become Dean Witter Reynolds. In 1981 that company was acquired by Sears Roebuck.
