Holding company for NordicTrack (fitness equipment), Boston Whaler, The Nature Company (specialty retailer), and Smith & Hawken (gardening equipment). Founded 1969 by Charles M. Leighton and G. Robert Tod, the company name formed by Leighton's initials. Irwin L. Jacobs attempted to acquire CML in 1990; he was fended off by the sale of Boston Whaler to Reebok. In 1996 CML sold The Nature Company to The Discovery Channel Store, Inc., in 1998 it sold NordicTrack to Icon Health & Fitness ($12M). CML filed for bankruptcy protection in 1998 with only one subsidiary remaining, Smith & Hawken.
