Ethyl Corporation

COMPANY

Gasoline additive manufacturer. Originally Ethyl was founded as a 1922 joint venture between General Motors, DuPont, and Standard Oil of New Jersey (Exxon). In 1962, Ethyl was acquired on credit by the much-smaller Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Company, which then assumed the Ethyl name. In 1994 Ethyl spun off its specialty chemical division as a public company, Albemarle. In 2004, Ethyl formed a holding company, NewMarket, and became a subsidiary.
