Founded 1905 as Fourth District Normal School. Name changed to Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1919, Southwest Missouri State College in 1945, Southwest Missouri State University in 1972, and Missouri State University in 2005. The university maintains an auxiliary campus in West Plains and another in Mountain Grove.
