I would like to start by saying that this "movie" is the first two episodes of a pilot season which ran for 22 episodes. The rating of two-and-a-half stars is for the first two episodes and not the series as a whole. And lastly, that the summary of this show being a "horrifically bad rip-off of Total Recall" doesn't make any sense. For Chrissakes the name of the show is Total Recall 2070, it's based off the same movie, or rather the same World, which I understand is the same World that Bladerunner takes place in, hence the similarities. I take it that the title of "Bladerunner" wasn't up for grabs so they took the next of kin. I recently got a hold of this whole series and I have to say it's not like any other syndicated series I've seen. Whereas in most sci-fi shows we get a group of people dressed in clean, pressed uniforms or aliens who look remarkably like humans with putty on their foreheads, this series actually manages to be much more cohesive in it's atmosphere. You wont see these characters on some "strange" planet that looks like the Nevada desert shooting phasers at nothingness off-screen. No this series, despite it's uncanny "Bladerunner" impersonation, is quite creative. It takes all of the parts from it's sources that work (which is why there is so little Total Recall the movie in it, what's in here is all that worked), and does it, more or less, right. I never understood most people's disappointment with the fact that it resembles Bladerunner more than it does Total Recall. Sometimes I wonder if those people didn't somehow take a visit to Recall and have their memories of the movie erased. Having no prior knowledge of this series before I saw it, I was very pleasantly suprised. I'll take the soft, dark ambience of Bladerunner and undertones of machine supremecy to three boobied girls and lines like, "Screw you Benny, aaaarrrgggghh!!!" any day of the future. Well, maybe not the three boobied part. But nevertheless, it's a real shame this show never got more of a chance. It is unique.
