A young Czech boy and his mother, separated at Auschwitz, search for each other in the American Occupied Zone of Germany. Neither of them knows if the other is still alive; an American G.I. is willing to adopt the boy and bring him to the United States. Ivan Jandl won a special Juvenile Oscar, and the film was awarded the year's Best Story Oscar. Fred Zinnemann was nominated for Best Director, and Montgomery Clift for Best Actor.
