A successful director of Hollywood comedies hankers to make a serious film. His studio bosses tell him his privileged life make him unprepared to make such a film; he attempts remedy by dressing as a hobo and venturing forth in the world with only ten cents in his pocket. On the road he is befriended by an aspiring actress played by Veronica Lake, who learns his true identity and continues with him on his journey. Told as a comedy, likely this is Preston Sturges' best film; it is certainly his most daring.
