Muriel Heslop, awkward 22-year-old Abba listener and the long-suffering victim of psychological abuse by her politician father, absconds with some of her family's money for a fantastic vacation, where she meets an old schoolmate, Rhonda, who is a free spirit; together they move to Sydney and Muriel rebrands herself as "Mariel."
