A riot breaks out in the interim, led by charismatic inmate Malamadre; mistaken for a fellow prisoner, Juan goes along with the proceedings out of a desire to save his own life, though he is soon thrust into a conspiracy of national importance when Malamadre learns of the presence of Basque separatists in the prison.
