A Mexican hit man falls into an espionage ring with a corrupt military general and mentally ill American intelligence agent.

Standing as the third entry in Mexican-American auteur Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi trilogy, Once Upon a Time in Mexico revisits characters explored in El Mariachi and Desperado, following psychotic CIA agent Sands as he works with Mexican officials to undermine a plan spearheaded by a rogue general to assassinate the fragile republic's president. Needing an experienced marksman to assist in eliminating his enemies, Sands turns to infamous musician-cum-hitman El Mariachi, drawing him into a grand final showdown against his time-worn foes as part of an espionage escapade spanning the globe.
