Irish simpleton Gypo Nolan, drummed out of the IRA, is completely broke and his girlfriend driven to prostitution to survive; he gives in to desperation and turns in former comrade Frankie McPhillip to British authorities. Wracked with guilt, his friends know he is the likely informant but have difficulty believing it could be him. Won Oscars for Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Score; received additional nominations for Best Picture and Best Editing.
