Original Title: Das Experiment

Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel

Writers: Don Bohlinger; Christoph Darnstädt; Mario Giordano

From novel: Black Box by Mario Giordano

Keywords: Thriller

Twenty men participate in a seemingly innocuous "prison" experiment with unintended complications.

Inspired by the infamous true-life "Stanford Prison Experiment" of 1971, The Experiment is a hair-raising German thriller examining human rationality and the fragility of one's sanity when subjected to controversial mind games. Twenty men from a variety of backgrounds are hired to act as "prisoners" and "guards" in a meticulously-crafted experiment created by a research facility, directed to adhere to a strict set of rules defining their behavior and supposedly safeguarding against things getting out of hand; in time, however, the participants' behavior disintegrates in a matter not unlike Lord of the Flies as they begin to sink deeper and deeper into their assigned roles.
