Loosely adapted from Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel Oil!, There Will Be Blood is a bleak character piece about Daniel Plainview, a prospector from New Mexico whose discovery of oil in Los Angeles and ruthless methods of operation after establishing a drilling enterprise lead to copious amounts of violence and interpersonal turmoil. Successful with critics and audiences upon its release, There Will Be Blood went on to be named one of the greatest films of its decade by a panoply of mainstream publications.
