Searching for Sugar Man (19-Jan-2012)

Director: Malik Bendjelloul

Keywords: Music Documentary

Documentary follows two South African fans of Sixto Rodriguez's efforts to discover what became of their beloved musician.

The curious case of Sixto Rodriguez, an American guitarist and Bob Dylan-esque songwriter whose wild amounts of fame in South Africa far outstripped anything he'd ever attained in his native country, is explored in Searching for Sugar Man, a documentary that follows obsessed fans Craig Bartholomew Strydom and Stephen Segerman's work to investigate rumors that their mysterious idol had killed himself during a concert in the 1970s. Released to widespread critical acclaim, Searching for Sugar Man led to a minor renewal of public interest in Rodriguez's life and body of work around the world. Won an Academy Award for Best Documentary.
