In the final days of WWII just after the surrender, Pvt. Mizushima, a prisoner-of-war, is tasked by the allies to approach a company which is unaware of the unconditional surrender. They refuse to lay down their arms, and are slaughtered by British forces. Now injured and in mental anguish, Mizushima disguises himself as a Buddhist monk and sets about burying the fallen. Powerful film. Received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film; winner of the San Giorgio Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
