A young man looking to protect his mother from shock after a coma tries to find a way to avoid revealing their native country, East Germany, no longer exists.

Middle-aged mother and East German Christiane Kerner suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma witnessing son Alex's arrest protesting their country's totalitarian regime. Problems arise when Christiane does not wake from her coma until after the fall of the Berlin Wall and communism, forcing a dedicated Alex to maintain the illusion of the GDR's continued existence for the benefit of her good health after he is informed that even the slightest shock or provocation could prove an effective death sentence.
