American soldiers Eddie, George, and Lloyd return from the Great War finding their country changed and Prohibition beginning; chance brings Eddie and George into the bootlegging business, and Lloyd their lawyer. On Black Tuesday in 1929, Eddie loses his entire fortune with the stock market crash. Filmed on a relatively generous budget and with an excellent cast, but lacking the intensity of Cagney's earlier pre-Code gangster films.
