The crew of a Soviet nuclear submarine on its maiden voyage must avert disaster when their vessel malfunctions.

Soviet nuclear submarine K-19, first of its kind in the Communist superpower, heads out on its maiden voyage in 1961, commanded by ultra-patriotic Captain Alexi Vostrikov and determined to produce a show of force against the United States at the height of the Cold War. Vostrikov ignores demoted ex-commander Mikhail Polenin's repeated warnings about the ship's unfinished state, leading to an intense showdown aboard the vessel when a malfunction threatens to discharge its payload and ignite World War III.
