Barbara Covett is a nihilistic, bitter old teacher at a high school in working-class London, nearing retirement and reviled by peers and pupils alike. New arrival Sheba Hart, a cheery, younger art teacher, serves to ignite a long-dormant spark in Barbara's depressing existence as the pair become friends; that friendship turns sour when Barbara discovers Sheba's affair with one of her fifteen-year old students, however, setting the elder on a path towards exacting "revenge" against her dishonest acquaintance.
