Robert De Niro plays Jake La Motta, middleweight boxer whose violent, self-destructive tendencies lead to his gradual downfall. Shot entirely in black and white, with particular attention paid to the boxing scenes unprecedented in cinema. De Niro gained 60 pounds to portray the fallen La Motta towards the end of the film. Won Oscars for Best Actor, Best Editing, and received nominations for 6 others including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Cinematography.
