Maximilian Schell won an Oscar for his portrayal as Rolfe, the judges' defense attorney; and Abby Mann the Oscar for Best Screenplay; the film received 9 additional nominations including Best Picture, another for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Cinematography.
