Idealistic recruit Chris Taylor finds his platoon schizophrenic; one the one hand we have Sgt. Elias, intent on surviving the war and respectful of life, and on the other Sgt. Barnes, ruthless, willing to kill civilians, and will win at any cost. Taylor finds himself caught between them; the Viet Cong are a simple outside threat. Won 4 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director; received nominations for Best Supporting Actor (two), Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay.
