Unemployable actor Michael Dorsey needs $8000 quickly to produce his roommate's play, but is unable to land any roles. He crossdresses and finds work in a soap opera as Dorothy Michaels; her strong no-nonsense personality makes her an instant runaway success. Though three writers are credited, it is Larry Gelbart that pulled the script together. The film has aged somewhat. Jessica Lange won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress; the film received 9 other nominations including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture.
