Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (17-Oct-1939)

Director: Frank Capra

Writers: Sidney Buchman; Lewis R. Foster

Musical Score by: Dimitri Tiomkin

Keywords: Drama, Washington DC

Filling a U.S. Senate vacancy, Gov. Hopper appoints Jefferson Smith, a Boy Scout leader who is idealistic, naive, and presumably easy to control. Smith crafts a benign bill to create a national boys' camp in the state, but the camp would be located at the very spot where the senior Senator from the state, Joseph Paine, intends with his cronies to construct a dam with public money. Won Oscar for Best Original Story; received 10 additional nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (two), Best Screenplay, and Best Score. Entered 1989 into the National Film Registry.
