John McClane, NYPD cop on vacation in Los Angeles, attends a company Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza, with his estranged wife Holly Gennaro. A dozen East Europeans take the entire party hostage, making political demands to the police but actually seeking the contents of the 30th floor vault.
