Film adaptation of the 1997 novel of the same name tells the tale of a woman's rise to prominence as one of Japan's foremost geisha.

Chiyo, a Japanese girl living in a quaint fishing village, is sold at the age of nine to a Kyoto-area geisha house just before the start of the 1930s. Abused by the house's proprietors and head geisha, Chiyo is ultimately rescued by rival Mameha, shaped into one of the empire's leading high-society hostesses just as World War II arrives and threatens to forever change the political destiny of her homeland.
