Top Gun (16-May-1986)

Director: Tony Scott

Writers: Jim Cash; Jack Epps, Jr.

Music Score by: Harold Faltermeyer

Producers: Don Simpson; Jerry Bruckheimer

Keywords: Drama, Cold War

Tom Cruise is Pete Mitchell, "Maverick", at the U.S. Navy school for elite fighter pilots. Also enrolled are Anthony Edwards as Goose, Mitchell's only friend; Val Kilmer as Iceman, a rival pilot. Formulaic, end-to-end clichés, obvious homoerotic subtext despite Meg Ryan's presence, a surplus of aerial fight scenes; it shows very much as a product of the Reagan 1980s that has become quite dated. Box office smash at the time, earning over $170M by the end of 1986.
