In postwar Sicily, Toto, a small boy absent his father and Alfredo, cinema projectionist share friendship and love of film. After Alfredo is blinded in a fire, Toto must fill in as projectionist. Told in flashback by the adult Toto, now an accomplished film director. Received an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film; won the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes. Best watched as the 123 minute version, not the 170 minute Director's Cut.
