Film director Guido Anselmi prepares a new big-budget film, but he suffers from indecision brought about by abundance. He has all the women he wants, can experience any pleasure he chooses, and because of prior successes he can make any film he chooses. Burdened by infinite possibilities, both for his life and for this film, he feels boredom and ends up with nothing. Nonlinear, Italian New Wave classic. Won Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design; received nominations for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Set Decoration.

Fellini says of his own film, "[8½] is extremely simple: it puts forth nothing that needs to be understood or interpreted."
