Ally Darling, a thirty-something woman stung by the latest in a series of messy breakups whilst coping with unemployment, happens upon a Marie Claire article -- titled What's Your Number? -- claiming that women with more than twenty lovers in their lifetime have difficulty settling down with a husband. Upon looking back into her past and realizing that her personal 'number' stands at nineteen, Ally launches herself on a journey to find "the one", endeavoring to get back in touch with every single one of her past romances as part of a mission to discover whether she'd inadvertently passed up true love.
