Beca Mitchell, a newly-minted freshman at Barden University, is a reluctant student attending college over her own wishes for a music career at the request of her father. After making a deal with her Dad that would allow her to move to Los Angeles if she joins an on-campus club and still does not want to remain at Barden after a year, Beca accepts overtures to join the school's all-girl singing group, soon finding herself knee-deep in a campus-wide competition against an all-male ensemble.
