Fourth installment in the action-adventure franchise follows Ethan Hunt as he works to defuse a potentially-cataclysmic conflict between the United States and Russia.

Series protagonist Ethan Hunt is retrieved from a Moscow prison and tasked with the objective of infiltrating a cache of Kremlin archives to ascertain the identity of a mysterious individual known only as "Cobalt". After the mission goes awry when a bomb destroys the Kremlin, Hunt finds himself suddenly working in concert with the American government and International Monetary Fund to track down "Cobalt", now identified as Russian nuclear strategist Kurt Hendricks, before he uses a nuclear launch-control device to initiate World War III with America.
