The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

NEWSPAPER

Founded 1819 by William E. Woodruff, it is the oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi River. He sold the paper in 1843 and established the Arkansas Democrat, then repurchased the Gazette, combining their names to be the Arkansas State Gazette and Democrat. The paper was sold in 1853 to Christopher Columbus Danley, who in 1859 changed the name to the Arkansas State Gazette, and it later became the Arkansas Gazette. In October 1991, a different Arkansas Democrat purchased the Gazette, and the combined entity was renamed to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
