Founded 1831. Purchased in 1841 by John Fairfax, whose family controlled the paper until 1990, when his great-great-grandson Warwick Fairfax's attempts to re-privatize the company ended in a $1.7-billion debt. The paper was purchased by Conrad Black in 1991.
