Former coca grower, and representative of his collective of growers. In 1995 he became leader of the leftist Movimiento al Socialismo ("Movement to Socialism") party. Morales unofficially represents coca-leaf growers, responsible for the larger part of Bolivia's economy. In 2002 Morales came in second in the national elections, and he won the 2005 election. Morales, largely of indigenous ancestry -- like 70% of the population, and quite unlike the traditional leaders of Bolivia -- holds views that are in direct opposition to longstanding American attempts to eliminate the coca crop, and has stated an intention of nationalizing the Bolivian natural gas deposits. He is an ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
