Executive summary: The King of Queens Kevin James played fullback on his college football team for three years, but dropped out after appearing in an amateur play. His older brother Gary was already a struggling comic, so James decided to try stand-up. After several years telling jokes in comedy clubs like Chuckles and YukYuk, James won the 1996 "Just for Laughs" Festival in Montreal. Meanwhile, a friend from the stand-up circuit, Ray Romano, had landed his own sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond. Romano found a spot for James on his show's writing staff, and James soon wrote himself a recurring role on Raymond. From 1998 to 2007, he played Doug Heffernan, a schlubby put-upon working stiff in the sitcom The King of Queens. His brother, Gary Valentine, played James's cousin Danny on the sit-com.
