His older brother Gary was already a struggling comic, so James decided to try stand-up. After several years telling jokes in comedy clubs like Chuckles and YukYuk, James won the 1996 "Just for Laughs" Festival in Montreal. Meanwhile, a friend from the stand-up circuit, Ray Romano, had landed his own sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond. Romano found a spot for James on his show's writing staff, and James soon wrote himself a recurring role on Raymond. From 1998 to 2007, he played Doug Heffernan, a schlubby put-upon working stiff in the sitcom The King of Queens. His brother, Gary Valentine, played James's cousin Danny on the sit-com.
