Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Novelist Nationality: United States Executive summary: Pyromancer Military service: US Navy (enlisted 1947, four years); USNR (20 years) Born in 1930, Callander grew up in Duluth, Minnesota where he graduated from high school before joining the U.S. Navy in 1947. He served four years of active service (during the Korean War) before transferring to the Naval Reserve -- where he logged an additional 20 years of service as a "weekend warrior". After his discharge from active service, Callander married and settled in Washington D.C. Here he worked on the Washington Post newspaper and in the National Headquarters of the 40-million-member American Automobile Association, in addition to some work as a photographer and graphic designer, until his retirement to Longwood, Florida, in 1991.
Although author Don Callander didn't publish his novel, Pyromancer, until he was 62 years old, his tale of young wizard-in-training Douglas Brightglade and his companions proved fresh and adventurous enough to find strong success. Callander went on to create four more books in the 'mancer series (Aquamancer, Geomancer, Aeromancer, Marbleheart) as well as a whole new series -- Dragon Companion, Dragon Rescue, and Dragon Tempest. Popular as Callander's books have been, they never quite garnered quite the same following as J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (1997), and many are now out of print.
