Ousted Gen. Juan Velasco in a bloodless coup. Free market capitalist. He attempted an economic stabilization program at the behest of the IMF, but by 1980 the economy was in even more disarray. Bermúdez handed power to a civilian government, ending a period of military control which began in 1968.
Candidate for President in 1985, but received very few votes.
An extradition attempt by Argentina in 2012 was denied by the Peruvian Supreme Court.
