By 1969, Sean Connery had made five films as superspy James Bond, and they had all been hits. Not surprisingly, he wanted a hefty raise to reprise the role in a sixth film, so the Bond producers looked elsewhere for a leading man. George Lazenby became the new James Bond, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He was a handsome fellow with an Australian accent, a very well-paid male super-model but a complete unknown as an actor. He had just one pre-Bond film role, a tiny bit in an Italian-made semi-schlock Bond rip-off titled Espionage in Tangier.

Lazenby's one Bond was a box office success, albeit derided by Bond purists; Lazenby, though, hadn't gotten along with co-star Diana Rigg, and he hadn't enjoyed making the movie. So before the film even opened, he told the producers he wouldn't return. For the next Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever, Connery was back, and very well paid.

After playing 007, Lazenby took a year off to cruise the world, and found few acting offers waiting when he returned. He resumed modeling, did low-budget action movies, soft-core porn, and had a brief stint on General Hospital. In 1973, Lazenby was on the verge of a comeback, a mere handshake from co-starring with Bruce Lee in Lee's follow-up to Enter the Dragon -- but alas, Lee died instead, and Lazenby faded further into obscurity.

He later played Jor-El, the Boy of Steel's natural father, in a 1980s Adventures of Superboy TV series, and voiced a bad guy in several episodes of the cartoon Batman Beyond.
