In May 2013, Snowden leaked classified Powerpoint presentation documents to the Guardian and The Washington Post, describing the NSA's PRISM surveillance program, which purport to prove the wholesale collection of content from various top Internet properties including Google, Facebook, and Skype.
From his Guardian interview:
The NSA has built an infrastructure that allows it to intercept almost everything. With this capability, the vast majority of human communications are automatically ingested without targeting. If I wanted to see your e-mails or your wife's phone, all I have to do is use intercepts. I can get your e-mails, passwords, phone records, credit cards.
I don't want to live in a society that does these sort of things… I do not want to live in a world where everything I do and say is recorded. That is not something I am willing to support or live under.
Snowden took leave of Booz Allen under the pretext of seeking treatment for epilepsy, using this as an excuse to relocate to Hong Kong, and his employment was subsequently terminated. At the end of June he flew to Russia, spending the next five weeks in the international zone of the Moscow airport. Russia eventually granted him political asylum for one year.
