Pioneer in fake grassroots movements, called "astroturfing." The firm he co-founded, Century Strategies, counted among its clients Enron and Jack Abramoff. In the 2000 Virginia Republican primary, a "527" organization established by Phillips, "The Faith and Family Alliance", perpetrated robocalls and mass mailings proclaiming Stephen Martin the "only Christian in the contest." Martin's opponent, Eric Cantor, is Jewish. In 2006 his experiences from Century found Phillips named president of another factory of fake grassroots movements, Americans for Prosperity. Among their activities are the Tea Party movement, health care disorder at town hall meetings, defeating cigarette taxes, and opposition to attempts to slow down global warming.
