Nine months into his second term, Governor Snell was killed in an airplane crash along with two other major Oregon officials: President of the Oregon Senate, Marshall E. Cornett, and Secretary of State Robert S. Farrell, Jr. The pilot, Cliff Hogue, was also killed. Since the next in the line of succession was Cornett, the governorship was assumed by John H. Hall, Speaker of the Oregon House.
