Executive summary: Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, 1991-2009
Jim Naugle is the long-serving mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. First elected in 1991, he is highly controversial within his city. Born to a paint retailer, Naugle's first experience with politics was working as a youth campaign manager for Barry Goldwater's unsuccessful run for President in 1964. In his twenties, Naugle founded his own paint company; he abandoned the company in 1975 to enter real estate, becoming a self-made millionaire in the process. While working in real estate, he made a run for the Fort Lauderdale city planning board in 1976. Winning that, he served there until 1985, then deciding to run for city commissioner. He won that as well, then successfully ran for mayor in 1991.
Naugle, while popular within Fort Lauderdale (he was last re-elected Mayor with 64.44% of the vote), is also an enigma. While he has been a registered Democrat all of his life, he only actually votes Democratic in elections once in a blue moon. He has supported every Republican presidential candidate since 1964, from Barry Goldwater to George W. Bush, and has endorsed Mike Huckabee for President in 2008. He is strongly pro-life and pro-death penalty, has called the ACLU the "Atheists and Criminal Lobbying Union", and has referred to the city's large gay population as sodomites. He supported the installation of a $250,000 robotic toilet in Fort Lauderdale bathrooms with the hope that they would somehow prevent homosexual contact.
Described by the Washington Post as a "renegade Democrat", he disclosed to the newspaper that he would likely have to do "some soul-searching" if he ever decided to run for higher office.
Naugle retired from the post of Mayor in 2009, as he was term-limited.
