Bowrey is the last amateur to have won the Australian Championships. Due to several key players having turned professional in 1967, competition in Australia was light. Bowrey, who had never advanced beyond quarterfinals in any Grand Slam, defeated Juan Gisbert, a Spaniard. In 1968 the tournament became the Australian Open and he lost in the quarterfinals to Ray Ruffels. Bowrey retired in 1972.
