William T. Dillard grew up working in his parents' general store, a busy and prosperous enterprise. After college he completed a management training program at Sears Roebuck, then quit Sears and opened his own T. J. Dillard's store in Nashville, Arkansas -- borrowing $8,000 from his parents to sign the lease and install shelves, and stocking those shelves with merchandise supplied on generous credit, extended on the basis of wholesalers' long dealings with his father. Dillard's was one of the first chains to computerize its accounting, and to add stores in suburban shopping malls. Dillard retired in 1998, leaving the business to be run by his five children. He died in 2002, and the chain he established now has more than 300 stores in the American south and midwest.
